#UDWBB’s Season Ends In NCAA Tournament First Round
LOUISVILLE – The University of Dayton women’s basketball team suffered an 84-65 loss to Marquette in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament Friday in Kentucky.
The Flyers (23-7) end their season while the Golden Eagles (24-9) move on to face Louisville Sunday.
KEY MOMENT
1st quarter – 3:53 – After Dayton came out firing in the first quarter, the tide turned at the 3:53 mark as Marquette went on a 13-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 15, Marquette 22
Dayton jumped out to a 7-3 lead with five points from junior Lauren Cannatelli.
Marquette was forced to call at timeout at the 7:09 mark as the Flyers rode a 7-0 run over 1:26. The Golden Eagles were 0-for-6 during that span.
Marquette suffered from a four minute scoring drought.
Sophomore Jayla Scaife scored eight straight points for the Flyers.
Marquette answered and pulled back within two at 15-13 with 3:05 to play.
Natisha Hiedeman scored the first 15 points for Marquette.
Dayton ended the quarter on a 3:31 drought while Marquette had a 13-0 run.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, Marquette 45
Dayton’s struggles continued to start the second, not scoring until the 7:26 mark.
Marquette pulled ahead by double digits in the early stages of the quarter.
By the media timeout, the Flyers trailed 33-23.
Both teams got into the bonus and free throws slowed down the pace of the game.
The Flyers went into the locker room at the half down 14.
Dayton trailed despite outshooting Marquette 43.5 percent to 37.5 percent.
UD had 16 turnovers in the first half.
Cannatelli led the Flyers with nine points while senior JaVonna Layfield had 10 rebounds.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 54, Marquette 69
Dayton attempted to battle back, but Marquette had an answer for each basket.
Midway through the quarter, the Flyers were down 13, 58-45.
Burdette reached double figures with 12 points.
Neither team had a field goal for a 2:30 stretch out of the media timeout.
Burdette scored six straight points for the Flyers.
UD was down 15 going into the final 10 minutes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 65, Marquette 84
The Flyers struck first in the fourth to start the rally attempt.
Dayton closed the gap to 11 in the first minute and a half of the quarter.
But then another scoring drought set in as the Flyers went scoreless for 2:45 halfway through the fourth.
In the end, Dayton did not have enough firepower to catch the Golden Eagles.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
378 – With her 378th rebound of the season, JaVonna Layfield the single season mark for rebounds, passing Hall of Famer Ann Meyers who set the previous mark in 1976-77.
39% – Dayton shot 39 percent from the floor.
