Lansing, Mich.—Lansing’s J.B. Woodman collected three hits including two doubles to lead the Lugnuts to an 8-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night.  The game was the start to a seven-game road trip for the Dragons and the opener to a three-game series in Lansing.

 

The Dragons did not lose any ground to the teams closest to them in the Midwest League East Division playoff race.  First place West Michigan and third place South Bend both lost on Tuesday.  The second place Dragons remain two games out of first and one game ahead of the third place club.  The Dragons have 13 games to play in the first half season.  The top two teams in the East Division first half standings will earn playoff spots.

Dayton Dragons left-handed pitcher Scott Moss has been selected as the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 4.

Moss made two starts during the week (1-0) and did not allow a run in 11 innings, surrendering just three hits with five walks and 13 strikeouts.

For the year, Moss is 8-1 with a 2.14 earned run average.  He leads the Midwest League in both wins and strikeouts.

Moss is a 21-year-old native of Deltona, Florida.  He was the Reds fourth round draft pick in 2016 out of the University of Florida.

Moss is the second Dayton player to earn a MWL Player of the Week honor in 2017.  Ryan Olson was the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the first week of the season.

Dayton, Ohio—The South Bend Cubs rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning and held off a Dayton comeback effort in the bottom of the inning as they defeated the Dragons 5-4 on Thursday night.  The Cubs won two-out-of-three in the series and pulled to within one game of the Dragons with the win.  The Dragons finished the night in second place, two games behind first place West Michigan.  The top two finishers in the division will qualify for post-season play.

The Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox, 9-4, on Monday in Goodyear Ballpark.

The Indians exploded for 9 runs from the bottom of the 5th thru the end of the contest, erasing an early 4-0 Chicago lead.  The Indians scored 5 times in the 7th inning on a RBI double from ROBERTO PEREZ, a 2-run double from COLLIN COWGILL and a 2-run home run from GIOVANNY URSHELA, his team-high 5th of the spring. Perez added an RBI single in the 8th  inning as did JOEY BUTLER to cap the scoring. Newly acquired OF MARLON BYRD reached base 3 times, going 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and a walk.  CARLOS CARRASCO (4.0IP, 6H, 3R/ER) started and CODY ALLEN, DAN OTERO, FELIPE PAULINO & JARRETT GRUBE notched scoreless innings of relief.

The Indians are off on Tuesday and resume Cactus League play on Wednesday, March 23 at 1:05 PM ET/4:05 PM ET against the Kansas City Royals in Goodyear. RHP DANNY SALAZAR starts against RHP KRIS MEDLEN for the Royals

The Indians (6-10-2) fell to the Cincinnati Reds, 8-6, in Goodyear Ballpark on Thursday.

JASON KIPNIS homered for the second time in as many days, connecting for a 3-run shot in the 4-run 3rd inning off Reds starter ROBERT STEPHENSON. TYLER NAQUIN went 2-for-4 with a run scored, triple and RBI to raise his spring average to .452.  SS ERIK GONZALEZ also connected for 2 hits on the day. On the mound, starter DANNY SALAZAR (4.0IP, 5H, 5R/ER) allowed 3 home runs.  JOE THATCHER, ROSS DETWILER & JEFF MANSHIP tossed scoreless innings during their relief stints.

On Friday, March 18th the Indians will take on the Oakland A’€™s in Goodyear Ballpark at 1:05 PM MT/4:05 PM ET.  RHP JOSH TOMLIN starts for Cleveland against RHP JESSE HAHN for the Athletics .
