RICHMOND, Ind. – Sophomores Kaitlin Morgan and Rachel Riggs won the Earlham College women’s tennis team’s first flight of the season, but the Defiance Yellow Jackets took the other eight flights as the Quakers fell 9-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Wednesday.
Morgan and Riggs defeated Nicole Tank and Dava Donaldson 8-6 at third doubles.Defiance (2-6, 1-3 HCAC) won first and second doubles both by a score of 8-2 to take a 2-1 match lead into singles play.
Morgan won the first set 6-2 over Donaldson at sixth singles, but fell 6-3 in set two. Because the match was already in hand, the two played a super tiebreak for the third set, which Donaldson won 10-4. Senior Jordyn Grimes showed fight at first singles, but lost to Savannah Marquez 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Carley Carpenter was tied 5-5 in the first set with Danielle Vance at fifth singles, but Vance won the next eight games to win the flight for Defiance.
Earlham dips to 0-5 on the season including 0-3 in HCAC play with the loss. The Quakers host Franklin and Berea on Saturday.
