URBANA, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2015) – Senior Mike McFarlane has been selected as the Mountain East Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
McFarlane, a native of Haddington, Scotland, helped guide the Blue Knights to two MEC victories last week, scoring three goals on six shots combined. In fact, the 6-foot-2 midfielder is Urbana’s leading scorer this season with four goals, all of which have gone down as headers.
McFarlane landed two headers in the first half at Concord last Thursday, which became his first career multi-goal performance. He tied the game at the 9-minute mark and then put the gamewinner through in the 31st minute off a throw-in.
On Sunday, McFarlane played a key role in UU’s 3-2 upset of No. 7 Notre Dame College. His 73rd minute goal off a free kick came at a pivotal moment, as a direct response to NDC’s game-tying goal, to put UU back on top 2-1.
McFarlane’s four goals have already tied his previous high for goals scored in a season. He is currently tied for 36th in the NCAA Division II rankings for goals scored.
Urbana (3-1-1, 2-1 MEC) returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 24 when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan. The MEC game is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET.
